ICIPE—African Insect Science for Food and Health is an intergovernmental organisation funded by governmental aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics. 

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Kenya and  Ethiopia.


icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Field Technical Assistant to work in our Thrips IPM programme based at Duduville campus, Kasarani, Nairobi. 
This is a national (local) position that offers two-year contracts that are renewable.

A competitive compensation package will be offered to the right candidate.

Field Technical Assistant in the Thrips IPM Programme

Responsibilities

Overall duties
Plan and establish field experiments in research farms and in farmers’ fields
Specific duties
Maintain and monitor on-farm experiments/demonstrations on novel thrips management strategies.
Conduct field surveys for collection, classification and identification of thrips and thrips-transmitted tospoviruses.
Collect, code and analyse data, and submit reports on progress of work.
Drive project vehicles during field assignments as and when needed.
Perform other duties as required.
Requirements/Qualifications
Bachelors degree in agriculture, crop science, crop protection or related disciplines from a reputed institute with a minimum of 2 years experience in a relevant field
Possess a valid and accident-free driving licence
The candidate should be aged 35 or below.
The candidate must also possess the following attributes:
Excellent knowledge of screenhouse/field experimentation, field agronomic operations and reporting skills.
Data collection and analysis skills.
Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Kiswahili.
Good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills, and must be able to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
A valid and accident-free driving licence.
Must be prepared to work beyond office hours as and when required.
Must be able to work with minimum supervision.
Eager and able to learn new skills and knowledge.

i. Overall duties


Provide administrative, financial, logistic and secretarial assistance to the coordinator and other project personnel.

ii. Specific duties
Prepare and monitor requisitions for project coordination and management
Maintain office filing system
Prepare minutes of the meetings
Update contents in project website
Provide logistical support for conduct of project training courses/workshops
Assist in travel and hospitality arrangements for in-coming and out-going official missions
Follow up with the implementing partners and sub-contractors for progress report, and submission of reports.
Requirements/Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of one years’ work experience in project assistance.
The candidate should be aged 35 or below.
The candidate must also possess the following attributes:
Demonstrate skills in office administration and management
Possess knowledge and proficiency in finance/accounting principles
Demonstrate skills in budget management and follow up on finance and administrative issues
Proficiency in computers with excellent working knowledge of MS-Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, spreadsheets and web content management
Good organisation, interpersonal skills, ability to multi-task and ability to organise work to respect deadlines with minimum supervision
Good knowledge and communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
Must be prepared to work beyond office hours as and when required to ensure completion of tasks.

Field Outreach Assistant (G-5)

Duties & Responsibilities:

The locally recruited Field Outreach Assistant is expected to provide support to the Field Outreach Coordinator for Kenya in executing the outreach strategies at the local level.

He/she will conduct outreach activities and will assist ¡n developing strategies and action plans relevant to various phases of the judicial proceedings, establish close contacts and partnerships with NGOs, community leaders, local media and educational institutions.

Essential Qualifications:
Completion of secondary education.
At least six years of relevant work experience.
Initiative, adaptability in stressful situations.
Ability to operate databases.
Demonstrated skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.
Strong communication skills (spoken and written), including ability to draft/compile a variety of written communications products and to articulate ideas in a clear, concise style.
Ability to effectively communicate information to the public; ability to establish and maintain effective business connections.
Knowledge of languages:

The working languages of the Court are English and French. For this position fluency in English is essential. Knowledge of Kenyan Swahili will be considered an asset.

Electrician

Overall duties
Electrical installation works.
Specific duties
Carry out electrical repairs and maintenance of distribution lines.
Undertake installation of electrical fittings and accessories.
Carry out machine repairs and the maintenance of electrical appliances.
Carry out repairs of refrigerators, cold rooms and air conditioners.
Maintain a record of all metres, power fluctuations and water pump operations.
Maintain generator(s) operations.
Carry out any other duties as assigned from time to time.
Requirements/Qualifications

The ideal candidate should:
Be a holder of a KCE or equivalent followed by diploma in electrical engineering or equivalent qualifications from a recognised institution.
Have two years hands-on experience doing similar tasks as those outlined above.
The candidate must also possess the following attributes:
Be able to work independently and with minimum supervision
Have good organisational skills to manage his/her time well.
Be prepared to work on weekends and public holidays when needed.
Be hard working and able to follow instructions.
